Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzgovina, May 19, 2009.

Safeta Ajanovic, 42, a Bosnian Muslim, was raped in 1992 by Serb soldiers. Impregnated by the rape, she fled to the forest for four months and miraculously made her way to Tuzla where she gave birth to her son Mirza. Her parents refused to acknowledge the child, and so they lived apart – she with her parents and her son in an orphanage – until he was 7 years-old. It was only after her parents died of natural causes in 2000 that she was able to be reunited with him and they now live together.
