Berlin, Germany. May, 2008.

Hilde Westrom, 96, hid in a bomb shelter in Berlin at the end of World War II, with her three young children and gave birth to her fourth child in April 1945, while her husband was a soldier. She became one of Berlin’s leading architects after the war, and continues to practice in Berlin today. Photographed under the apple tree in her backyard. The house was bombed and destroyed during the war, but the tree survived.
